Working with Volunteers

Working with volunteers is an excellent community-building activity. We can also combine it with lectures or training. We supervise the laying out of the labyrinth, with volunteers doing most of the work.

In some cases, the materials are simple, such as stones and mulch. If we dig out the lines for bricks or dig out the paths with a sod cutter, the process is tremendously labor intensive. Hiring workers would be expensive. Volunteers can make the difference in affording the labyrinth or not.

In recent years, we have installed many labyrinths using crushed granite overlay (see below). The process is more involved, but technologically accessible and cost effective. For more information see granite.
